P-TECH: Pathways to Early College High School
The P-TECH Academy is a new instructional space and self-contained college preparatory school — a college campus within an educational center. The building is located at Springville-Griffith Institute CSD and is leased to Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES (E2CCB). A rigorous STEM curriculum prepares students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Erie 2 BOCES has partnered with Alfred State, Springville-Griffith Institute, the Erie County Industrial Development Agency, Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance, regional chamber of commerce offices and school districts throughout the region to develop the Careers in Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) P-TECH Program. P-TECH students begin their college courses in the sophomore year of the program and have up to six years to complete their Associate of Occupational Studies degree in Electrical Construction / Maintenance Electrician or their Associates Degree in Computer Information Systems from Alfred State SUNY College of Technology.
To accommodate the program, Springville's 12,177 square foot district office building was fully renovated into classrooms, computer information system labs, and office spaces. A 20,520 square foot addition at the rear of the building was outfitted with two electrical laboratory classrooms, a cafeteria, gymnasium, and locker rooms. A new building entrance feature ties the two spaces together. The building also features a vegetative green roof to reduce storm water run-off. The green roof includes both a programmable watering system to keep the sedum alive during the summer months, and a leak detection system to pinpoint any leaks which might arise over the lifespan of the system. Additionally, the structure above the cafeteria and gym addition was designed to allow for the future installation of solar panels. Building components at the ground level also include a snowmelt system. The P-TECH project was nominated for a Brick-by-Brick Award and recognized as a finalist in the Tech Spaces category.
